Perhaps the most regular topic discussed at energy conferences is regulating the price of energy to consumers. And this week EDF revealed it would be the last of the "big six" energy companies to increase prices.

Over the winter period EDF publicized a freeze on prices throughout winter. However today it revealed it would increase gas prices by 6.5%, while electricity would rise by 7.5%. The changes are expected to take place in March.

The increase in wholesale gas prices alongside new environmental legislation and other changes were blamed by EDF. Customers of Scottish Power, British Gas, and Npower have all seen recent price rises.

However energy regulator Ofgem is currently reviewing the domestic energy sector and analysing the prices charged to customers. It will then decide if more action is needed to protect customers.
